What About Confession?
We read in the Bible that "The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" (Matthew 9:6). We also read that the risen Lord enabled the Church to forgive sin in His name when He appeared to the apostles after His resurrection: "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven…" (John 20:23). The Mystery of Repentance (Confession) is the Church’s principal way to exercise this ministry. You should know:
There may be set times when your priest is available to hear confessions. Most priests will do so at any time upon request. A few moments before the Liturgy or before a major celebration such as Good Friday is not a good time to ask the priest to give you his undivided attention.
People are encouraged to go to confession during the church’s fasting seasons, particularly during the Great Fast before Pascha. Some parishes have penitential services, sometimes in conjunction with parish retreats during this season.
You should prepare for confession by reviewing what you have done (and failed to do) in light of the Gospel. Your parish priest can provide a pamphlet or booklet with suggestions for this preparation.
The priest will hear your confession before an icon of Christ, as it is Christ to whom you are confessing. The priest may ask you questions and make suggestions. He will place the end of his epitrachilion (priestly garment) on your bowed head and say the prayer of absolution. Afterwards, you may kiss the cross and his hand
